Scoliosis Bracing and Playing Sports (Contd)

We have a lot of kids that are in youth programs who think that if they have to wear a scoliosis brace that they can’t play sports.  That is usually not the case. For patient confidentiality reasons, we will change the names and locations.

Scoliosis Bracing and Contact Sports

Tray is a high school football player in Gilbert, AZ. In addition to being a football player, he’s also a wrestler, and to mix things up, he’s also in the drama club. He also has to wear a scoliosis brace. Does it interfere with him playing contact sports such football and wrestling? Not at all. Tray’s scoliosis is largely hereditary, and as curvature goes, his isn’t bad. The level of bracing as well as the type of bracing involved all depend on what your doctor determines. If you’re going to be getting into sports, most schools require you to have a physical in any event. Tray is young, healthy, active, and not anywhere close to being an invalid.

Allie is a track star, is on the tennis team, and is a black belt in Kenpo karate. She also volunteers at a local animal shelter and is going to be graduating early with a free ride scholarship to Stanford. She also has scoliosis and has to wear a soft scoliosis brace. She will most likely not need to wear the brace in a couple of years as her curvature will likely straighten itself out with the help of one of our soft braces.  Allie works around her scoliosis, and doesn’t let it beat her.  And these are only two examples of patients that use our braces and still are healthy and active in multiple areas of life.

Why Scoliosis Treatment Matters

Once you have been diagnosed with scoliosis, and we can’t stress this enough:  LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR. If your doctor recommends that you do nothing, then do nothing.  If your doctor recommends scoliosis treatment, then get treatment.  And most of all, remember one thing:  scoliosis is not the end of the world.

So remember, there are two ways to deal with any sort of diagnosis.  You can let it hold you back and push you down, or you can view it as nothing more than a challenge to get around.  And with the right scoliosis brace, you can put scoliosis in your rear view mirror.
