    What Causes Scoliosis?

What causes scoliosis? Can scoliosis be cured? First off, scoliosis is a neuro-muscular condition that causes a sideways deformation of the spine’s alignment into a ‘C’ or ‘S’s shape. While its causes remain unknown, one form of scoliosis runs in families.  This type of scoliosis is called idiopathic scoliosis.  While there is no cure for scoliosis, there are several treatment options available for scoliosis including soft scoliosis braces from manufactures such as Spinecor®.

Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common variety of scoliosis and one that is easily treatable using scoliosis bracing or other scoliosis
treatment options, such as surgery and observation. Your scoliosis chiropractor can recommend any of these treatments depending on the severity of the condition and the patient’s physical maturity. Scoliosis is far more common in female patients. Symptoms usually show up in childhood. Early detection is critical to prevent scoliosis from getting worse.

Can’t I Do Exercise or Just Sit Up Straight to Correct Scoliosis?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to correct scoliosis with improved posture or exercises to improve scoliosis. It is up to your scoliosis chiropractor in Arizona to determine whether you need observation, surgery, or a solution such as soft scoliosis bracing.  Not all patients can be fitted with a soft scoliosis brace.

For example, a scoliosis patient with 30-degree or higher curvature must wear a rigid brace. It assists in the correction by placing pressure against the spine for stability. All scoliosis treatment options have their pluses and minuses.  The drawback to
a hard brace is that the patient must wear the brace for up to 24 hours a day. The success or failure of bracing treatment often comes down to three things.

First, the scoliosis brace must be fitted by a licensed scoliosis chiropractor.  Next the type and level of scoliosis must always determine the type of bracing necessary.  And finally, the patient wears the brace as recommended

Scoliosis bracing should stabilize the curve, prevent further progression, and ideally correct the curve. The best outcomes for scoliosis cases arise when the scoliosis is detected and treated as early as possible, however, while  teenagers and pre-adolescents can be treated with bracing, adults with scoliosis can be successfully treated as well. In cases where the adult spine is very flexible, it may be possible for a brace to make a small reduction, but as a general rule; improvements in pain and posture are the primary goals in treating adult scoliosis.

Ultimately, it all starts with a visit.  Schedule an appointment with your scoliosis chiropractor in Gilbert, AZ.
